What Our Readers Know About Edinburgh That Guidebooks Don’t
When thousands of Scotland lovers vote on their favourite Edinburgh experience, the results are very different from what travel magazines recommend. Our readers have actually done these things — repeatedly — and here’s what they’ve learned.
- The Edinburgh Castle entry price is worth it exactly once. At £19.50, Edinburgh Castle is one of Scotland’s most expensive attractions. The views, the Crown Jewels, and the Stone of Destiny justify one visit. After that, enjoy the Castle from the outside — Princes Street Gardens, Calton Hill, and the Grassmarket all offer stunning views for free.
- The best Edinburgh experiences are the ones you can repeat. A morning coffee at The Milkman on Cockburn Street. Sunset from Calton Hill. A pint at the Sheep Heid Inn (Scotland’s oldest pub, in Duddingston). The activities that locals do weekly are the ones visitors remember years later.
- Edinburgh’s free museums are world-class. The National Museum of Scotland, the Scottish National Gallery, and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery are all free. Combined, they represent one of the finest free museum collections in Europe. You could spend three full days in these alone.
- Book a table at The Witchery if you want one unforgettable Edinburgh meal. It’s at the top of the Royal Mile, the décor is theatrical, and the food is excellent. It’s a splurge (mains £30-40) but one dinner at The Witchery is worth more than three mediocre Royal Mile tourist meals.

A Traveller’s Perspective
Edinburgh has dozens of excellent experiences, and what tops the list depends entirely on what you are looking for. But the community vote for the best experience is a useful guide because it reflects what real visitors genuinely enjoyed, not what a marketing team decided to promote. Word-of-mouth recommendations from people who have actually done the thing are almost always more reliable than glossy adverts.
If this is your first time in Edinburgh, start with the big three: Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile walk, and Arthur’s Seat. After that, branch out based on your interests. History lovers should try the Real Mary King’s Close or the National Museum. Whisky fans will enjoy the Scotch Whisky Experience. For views, Calton Hill at sunset is free and spectacular. Book any paid attractions in advance online — the queues at the castle in summer can be over an hour.
The best Edinburgh experiences are often free. Standing on Calton Hill as the sun drops behind the castle. Walking through the Meadows when the cherry blossom is out in spring. Browsing the second-hand bookshops on Victoria Street. Watching the street performers at the Fringe in August. The city has a talent for making ordinary moments feel memorable — something about the light, the stone, and the ever-present backdrop of castle and crag.
