The Honest Truth About Edinburgh’s Hop-On Hop-Off Bus
Hop-on hop-off buses are a staple of every tourist city. Edinburgh’s version has specific strengths and weaknesses that reviews don’t always capture. Here’s the unfiltered assessment.
- It’s genuinely useful for your first day only. The commentary gives you a mental map of the city and helps you decide what’s worth visiting in depth. After that first circuit, you’ll walk everywhere faster than the bus can drive through Edinburgh’s narrow streets.
- Skip the bus for the Royal Mile â walk it instead. The bus crawls through Old Town traffic and you see almost nothing from the upper deck because the buildings are too close. Walking from the Castle to Holyrood takes 25 minutes and you’ll see ten times more.
- The New Town extension route is the bus’s best-kept secret. Most tourists stick to the main loop. The extended route through Stockbridge and the New Town passes Georgian architecture, the Royal Botanic Garden, and residential streets that show you how Edinburgh actually lives.
- Buy tickets online the night before â they’re cheaper and you skip the queue. Ticket queues at Waverley Bridge can be 20 minutes long in summer. Online tickets are typically ÂŁ2-3 cheaper and you board immediately. Some operators offer two-day passes that are better value than single days.

A Traveller’s Perspective
The Edinburgh hop-on hop-off bus divides opinion, but I think it is worth doing once, especially on your first visit. It gives you a mental map of the city that walking alone takes much longer to build. You see how the Old Town and New Town relate to each other, how close the castle is to Princes Street, and where the key landmarks sit. After one circuit, Edinburgh makes more sense on foot.
Buy your ticket online the night before to save a few pounds. Start at the Waverley Bridge stop early in the morning when the buses are less crowded. Stay on for the full loop first to get your bearings, then hop off at the stops that interest you most. The Grassmarket and Royal Mile stops are the most useful. Avoid doing the bus in heavy rain â the open-top deck is the whole point, and wet plastic seats are no fun.
From the top deck on a clear day, the views over Edinburgh are superb. As you swing round past Calton Hill, the Firth of Forth opens up to your right, blue and wide, with the coast of Fife visible beyond. The audio guide points out buildings and streets you would walk straight past otherwise. There is a moment as you pass under the castle rock where the sheer scale of the fortification above you becomes properly apparent â towering volcanic stone with a fortress perched on top.
