Escape to Portobello
Situated just three miles away from the bustling tourist hub of Edinburgh’s Old Town, Portobello stands in stark contrast to the mediaeval spires and enigmatic alleyways that characterise the city’s renowned charm.
The history of this shoreline has traversed a rollercoaster of transformations over centuries, evolving from a thriving industrial hub in the 18th century to an upscale Victorian-era seaside retreat, and eventually settling into a slightly overlooked neighbourhood of faded grandeur as the new millennium dawned.
Gradually and inconspicuously, independent boutiques have sprung up along the high street, while street food stalls have taken the place of the long-standing Wimpy fast food joint that tenaciously clung to the promenade’s arcades for generations.
On sunny days – colloquially referred to as “taps aff” weather in the local vernacular – finding an unoccupied patch of sand along the expansive beachfront can prove to be a challenge.
The shoreline is adorned with rainbow-hued windbreakers and disposable barbecues, claiming their spaces.
Cafés and eateries along the promenade spill their tables and chairs outside, treating patrons to dishes like avocado toast and eggs Benedict paired with captivating sea vistas. Notably, the allure of artisanal ice cream stands is ever-present, ensuring you’re never far from a refreshing treat.
