What is the best month to tour Scotland?
Summer months can be very busy in Scotland, so the best time to visit Scotland is during spring (late March to May) and autumn (fall)(September to November). Spring weather is warmer after the cold winters in Scotland although there might still be snow on the mountains of the highlands. Autumn months are pleasant and not as busy as the peak summer season.
An Honest Month-by-Month Verdict on Touring Scotland
There is no single best month. There is, however, a month that suits what you want to do. The answer depends on whether you prioritise weather, daylight, crowds, cost, or midges — and in Scotland, you cannot optimise for all five at once.
- May for the Highlands, September for Edinburgh. May gives you long days, few midges, and quiet roads in the Highlands. September gives you Edinburgh after the Fringe crowds have left, with autumn colour in the Pentland Hills and lower hotel prices. Trying to do both regions in the same trip means compromising on timing for one of them.
- Avoid the last two weeks of July entirely. Scottish schools break up in late June, and the entire country goes on holiday. The Highlands, Skye, and the NC500 are at peak capacity. Accommodation costs double. If your dates are flexible, the first two weeks of June offer similar weather with half the crowds.
- October is secretly the best value month. Flights and accommodation drop 30-40% from peak. The autumn colour across Perthshire, the Trossachs, and the Cairngorms is genuinely spectacular. Most attractions stay open until the end of October. The only trade-off is shorter days and a higher chance of rain.
- December to February is for city breaks only. Highland roads, B&Bs, and attractions close for winter. Daylight lasts 6-7 hours. But Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, Glasgow’s nightlife, and Speyside distillery tours make a winter city break worthwhile. Do not plan a driving tour of the Highlands in January unless you are an experienced winter driver.

How long does it take to drive around Scotland?
A full round-trip tour will take up to 5 days but that will leave you very little time for exploring. We would advise a good 10 to 14 days for the best experience.
How long is the train from London to Scotland?
Trains leave daily from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley and the trip is anywhere from 4 to 6 hours. For a real train experience, take the overnight sleeper train from London to Scotland which takes around eight hours. Travel in style with zero stress.
