You will find these records on ScotlandsPeople:

• Census records: full household returns from 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901, and 1921

• Spelling was not fixed. A name like MacDougall might appear as McDougal, McDougall, or MacDugall in the same family.

Marriage records list the occupations and ages of both parties, plus their parents’ names. Death records name the deceased’s parents — which lets you jump back a full generation in one step.

Once you locate a death record, use the parents’ names to search for their own birth records. Then use those birth records to find their parents. Each record opens the door to the one before it. Work backwards, one generation at a time.

Step 5 – Explore Kirk Session Records

Kirk session records are one of the most underused resources in Scottish genealogy. The kirk session was the local church council, made up of the minister and elected elders. They kept detailed minutes of church business — and discipline cases.

When a child was born outside of marriage, both parents faced the session. The minutes record both their names. This makes kirk session records invaluable — especially when the father does not appear in any other source.

Kirk session records also document:

• Communion rolls listing local households
• Poor relief payments naming recipients

Step 6 – Search Emigration and Passenger Records

Millions of Scots left their homeland between the 1700s and the early 1900s. Finding the ship they sailed on gives you a departure date and a port of origin. Sometimes you get an exact home parish too.
