Scotland’s Finest: The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards – There’s a regiment in the British Army whose story reads like Scotland herself wrote it — forged in battle, steeped in legend, and still very much alive today. The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, Scotland’s only cavalry regiment, carry more than 340 years of history on their shoulders, and every step they take echoes with the thunder of grey horses charging across the fields of Waterloo.

From Grey Horses to Jackal Vehicles
The regiment traces its roots all the way back to 1678, born from the famous Royal Scots Greys — so named for the striking grey horses they rode into battle — along with the Carabiniers, whose own origins go back to 1681. These were two of the oldest cavalry regiments in the British Army, and when they merged in 1971 to form the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, something truly special was created: Scotland’s senior and only regular cavalry regiment, proudly carrying the motto Second to None.
Today’s soldiers may exchange grey horses for Jackal reconnaissance vehicles, but the regiment’s fighting spirit hasn’t changed a jot. They’ve served in Northern Ireland, the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, and dozens of campaigns in between, earning 88 battle honours along the way — 50 of which are borne proudly on the regimental standard.
The Eagle of Waterloo
If there’s one moment that defines the regiment’s legend, it’s the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. As the Scots Greys thundered through the ranks of the Gordon Highlanders and crashed into the French lines, Sergeant Charles Ewart — a six-foot-four Ayrshire man described as a master swordsman of Herculean strength — fought his way through a desperate mêlée and seized the Imperial Eagle standard of the French 45th Regiment of the Line. Only two French eagles were captured that day by the entire British Army. Ewart got one of them.
That eagle is now one of the most prized objects in Scottish military history. You can see it today at the National War Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh Castle — and Ewart himself is buried on the Castle Esplanade, honoured in his homeland forever. The captured eagle also lives on in the regiment’s cap badge, a daily reminder of what Scottish courage looks like when it counts.
“Scotland’s only cavalry regiment has carried its eagle with pride for over 200 years — through Waterloo, Balaklava, two World Wars, and beyond. Second to None.”
The Sound of Scotland — Number One in the Charts
Here’s a fact that still surprises people: in 1972, a British Army regiment topped the UK pop charts. The Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards recorded a haunting bagpipe version of Amazing Grace, and it went to number one — staying there for five weeks. It went on to earn eight gold discs worldwide. If you’ve ever felt a shiver run down your spine hearing those pipes, you’ll know exactly why.
The regiment’s musical tradition stretches back over 300 years, and their Pipes and Drums remain one of the most recognised in the world. They’re a regular feature at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo — one of Scotland’s most spectacular events — and hearing them play against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle is an experience you genuinely don’t forget.
Visit the Museum — Right Inside Edinburgh Castle
If you want to walk right into this history, the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Museum sits inside Edinburgh Castle in the historic New Barracks — a building dating back to the 1790s. It’s a gem that many visitors overlook, but absolutely worth your time.
The collection spans more than 300 years: uniforms, swords, medals, paintings, and the regiment’s remarkable artefacts — including the story of that captured eagle and three Victoria Crosses earned by soldiers of the regiment’s antecedent regiments. Whether you’re a military history buff or simply someone who loves Scotland’s story, it’ll give you goosebumps.
The museum is open to visitors at Edinburgh Castle, included as part of your castle admission. You can also explore the regimental archive for family history research — just make an appointment. For more information, visit scotsdg.org.uk.
Scotland’s Regiment — Still Going Strong
There’s something deeply moving about a regiment that has ridden through centuries of history and still stands proudly today. The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are a living thread connecting modern Scotland to Waterloo, Balaklava, and beyond. Next time you’re at Edinburgh Castle and you hear those pipes drift across the esplanade, take a moment — that sound has been Scotland’s calling card to the world for over 300 years.
