What the Loch Lomond Tourist Trail Misses
Loch Lomond is Scotland’s most accessible loch — 30 minutes from Glasgow — and that accessibility is both its greatest strength and weakness. Most visitors see only the busy southern shore. The real Loch Lomond is further north.
- Drive to Luss, not Balloch, for your first stop. Balloch is the gateway town and feels like it — car parks, fast food, tourist tat. Luss, 8 miles further north, is a picture-perfect lochside village with stone cottages, a beach, and a fraction of the crowds. It’s the Loch Lomond the song is actually about.
- The west shore road to Inverarnan is the scenic drive nobody takes. The A82 along the west side of the loch is narrow, winding, and inconvenient — which is exactly why it’s magnificent. Stop at Tarbet for lunch, walk down to the pier, and look north to where the loch narrows into Highland territory.
- Kayaking on Loch Lomond beats every boat tour. Guided kayak trips launch from Luss and Balmaha and take you to the loch’s islands — Inchconnachan, Inchmurrin, and Inchcailloch. Being at water level with the mountains rising around you is an experience no cruise can match.
- The West Highland Way starts (or ends) here — walk even a section. You don’t need to hike all 96 miles. The 7-mile stretch from Balmaha to Rowardennan follows the loch’s eastern shore through ancient oak woodland with views across to Ben Lomond. It’s one of Scotland’s finest half-day walks.

Scottish Air Traffic Controller Attempts to Guide a Plane to Safety – For anyone who’s ever had to understand someone with a strong accent, this video is sure to amuse. In it, a Scottish air traffic controller (played by James McAvoy) tries to guide a plane to a safe landing.
The pilot, alas, has a bit of trouble understanding the controller’s thick accent. Hilarity ensues.

A Traveller’s Perspective
Loch Lomond is the most accessible piece of genuine Highland scenery in Scotland. It is less than an hour from Glasgow, which means you can have breakfast in the city and be standing on the shore of the largest lake in Britain by mid-morning. The south end is busier and more developed. The north end, beyond Tarbet, is wilder and quieter. Both have their appeal, but the north is where the real magic is.
Drive up the west shore on the A82 for the best views. Stop at Luss for a short walk — it is a pretty village but do not spend more than half an hour. Continue north to Tarbet and then on to Inverarnan. If you want to get on the water, the cruise boats from Balloch are fine but the kayak hire at Balmaha on the east shore gives you a much better experience. For walkers, the climb up Conic Hill from Balmaha takes about two hours return and gives you a panoramic view of the loch and its islands.
On a still morning, Loch Lomond is like glass. The mountains on the far shore reflect perfectly in the surface. The air smells of pine and damp earth. Ducks paddle silently through the shallows. It is hard to believe that Glasgow, with all its noise and energy, is just down the road. That contrast is part of what makes Loch Lomond so special — you can go from urban to wild in less time than it takes to eat lunch.
