Why Your Family Left Scotland

The Clearances ran from roughly 1750 to 1860. Estate owners found that sheep farming brought far more profit than the rents paid by crofting tenants. So they cleared the tenants. Families were given days to leave homes their ancestors had lived in for generations.

Some moved to Lowland cities. Many emigrated. Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Upper Canada received hundreds of thousands of these families. They boarded ships at ports like Ullapool, Stornoway, and Greenock, often with little more than they could carry.

The Sutherland Clearances were some of the most brutal. In the 1810s and 1820s, the Countess of Sutherland’s agents evicted thousands of families from Strathnaver and Kildonan. Many Mackay, Gunn, and Sutherland families ended up in Pictou County and Cape Breton.

The Lewis and Skye Clearances sent MacLeods, MacDonalds, and MacAulays to Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island. Entire parishes moved together. They chose the same ships, settled the same valleys, and named their new communities after the places they had left.

You do not need to travel to Scotland to start your research. Many key records are now online.

Start in Nova Scotia with these sources:

Planning Your Scotland Homecoming Trip

Once you have a family name and a home region, Scotland opens up in a very real way.

Where to Go in Scotland If Your Family Came From Nova Scotia

Isle of Skye

Skye lost more people to emigration than almost any other part of Scotland. The Clearances hit hard here in the early 1800s. MacLeods, MacDonalds, and MacKinnons from Skye ended up in large numbers in Cape Breton. The Portree area and the Trotternish Peninsula are the best places to start. A 5-Day Scotland Homecoming Itinerary for Nova Scotians

This itinerary follows the route most relevant to Cape Breton and Nova Scotian families. Adjust it based on your specific home region.

Day 1 — Inverness. Fly into Inverness. Spend the afternoon at the Highland Archive Centre on Bught Road. Give the staff your family details — they may find records you have never seen. In the evening, walk along the River Ness. It is the same river your ancestors knew.

Day 2 — Sutherland and Strathnaver. Drive north along the A9 and A836. Visit Strathnaver Museum in Bettyhill. Walk to the ruins of the cleared township at Rossal. It is quiet and remote. That quiet is deliberate — this was once a living community. The drive back via the A838 along the north coast takes you through some of the most dramatic scenery in Scotland.
