Sheep needed little labour and generated far more profit. The people became an inconvenience.

Soldiers and sheriff’s officers arrived at croft doors across Sutherland, Ross-shire, Inverness-shire, Argyll, and the Western Isles. Families got days or hours of notice. Bailiffs burned the thatch off roofs to stop people returning. Belongings landed in the fields. Whole communities — sometimes dozens of families from the same glen — walked to the coast and boarded ships. The land behind them fell silent.

This was not a sudden event. It happened gradually, across a century, with different landlords acting in different regions. The effect was the same everywhere. Communities that had shaped Highland culture for a thousand years simply ceased to exist.

When Did the Highland Clearances Happen?

The Clearances unfolded in waves across more than a century.

The first clearances began after 1746. The British government crushed the Jacobite Rising at Culloden and broke the traditional clan system. Clan chiefs lost the legal right to call their people to arms. Many responded by treating their land as a commercial asset. Clearing tenants became a business decision — not a betrayal of kinship, at least in the landlords’ eyes.

The most devastating clearances hit between 1792 and 1860. The agents of the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland forcibly removed around 15,000 people from the interior glens between 1811 and 1820. Patrick Sellar, the estate factor who directed many of these evictions, became one of the most reviled figures in Scottish history. A court tried him in 1816 for the death of an elderly woman after his men burned her home. He escaped conviction.

By the 1840s, the Great Famine struck the Scottish Highlands alongside Ireland. Potato blight destroyed the harvest that crofting families depended on. Landlords accelerated the clearances, paying for assisted passages to remove starving tenants. Emigration ships left from Loch Broom, the Sound of Sleat, and the shores of the Western Isles.

The clearances continued through the 1850s. In 1853, Lord MacDonald evicted over 600 people from Boreraig and Suisnish on Skye — including elderly people and children — and shipped them to Australia. Some received no time to gather their possessions.

The Crofters’ Holdings Act of 1886 finally gave crofters legal security of tenure. It came too late for those already gone.

Why Did Landlords Force Highlanders to Leave?

Three forces drove the Clearances: economics, politics, and ideology.

Economics. After Culloden, wool became highly profitable. A single Cheviot sheep farmer could pay more rent than twenty crofting families combined. Clearing the glens made financial sense to landowners. The people who had farmed those glens for centuries were simply unprofitable.

Politics. The British government stripped Highland clan chiefs of military power after Culloden. The old bond between chief and clansman — the social contract of the clan system — collapsed. Chiefs who had once needed their people for military strength now saw them only as tenants they could replace.

Ideology. Many landlords genuinely believed they were helping their tenants. They viewed the Highlands as backward and crofters as idle. Emigration to the colonies, they argued, offered families a better future. This reasoning justified a great deal of cruelty.

Where Did Cleared Families Settle?

The cleared Highlanders scattered across the world, and their presence shaped the places they settled.

Canada received the largest numbers. Nova Scotia — literally “New Scotland” in Latin — became home to thousands of Scottish families. Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia still has communities where people speak Gaelic. The Gaelic College of Celtic Arts and Crafts in St Ann’s stands because so many Highland families settled there and refused to let the language die.

Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec also took large numbers. Many family names in these communities trace directly back to cleared glens: MacDonald from Glengarry, Sutherland from Strathnaver, MacKenzie from Ross-shire.

Australia received thousands more, particularly in the 1840s and 1850s when landlords paid for assisted passages. Scottish families settled across Victoria and New South Wales. Many arrived with nothing. Some died on the voyage. Those who survived built farms on land as different from the Highlands as any place on earth.

New Zealand attracted Scottish families throughout the second half of the 19th century. Scots settled Otago, the southernmost province, in large numbers. The city of Dunedin — whose name comes from the Gaelic for Edinburgh — still celebrates its Scottish heritage each year.

The United States also received Highland emigrants, particularly in the Carolinas. Highland Scots had settled North Carolina’s Cape Fear Valley before the Clearances even began — some arrived after Culloden as Jacobite exiles. Families continued to arrive through the 18th and 19th centuries.

Which Scottish Regions Suffered Most?

The Clearances touched almost every part of the Highlands and Islands, but some areas suffered more completely than others.

Sutherland

Sutherland experienced the most systematic clearances. The Duke of Sutherland’s agents emptied the entire interior of the county between 1811 and 1820. Vast glens that had supported farming communities for millennia stood silent within a decade. The 1st Duke’s memorial statue on Ben Bhraggie above Golspie remains one of Scotland’s most debated landmarks.

Ross-shire and Inverness-shire

Landowners cleared Ross-shire and Inverness-shire from the mid-18th century onward. Glens feeding into the Great Glen and Loch Ness corridor lost thousands of families. Strathconon, Glenstrathfarrar, and dozens of smaller valleys stand nearly empty today.

The Isle of Skye

Landlords cleared Skye repeatedly. Trotternish in the north and the Strathaird and Sleat peninsulas in the south all saw major evictions. The 1853 clearances of Boreraig and Suisnish became well documented because survivors’ stories reached the mainland press.

The Outer Hebrides

Lewis, Harris, North and South Uist, and Barra all lost large numbers of people across the 19th century. South Uist and Barra, which had large Catholic populations, saw mass emigrations to Cape Breton funded by landlords who wanted the land for sheep.

Highland Clearances Sites to Visit Today

Stand in the cleared glens today and you can feel the absence. Stone foundations mark where houses stood. Field systems show in the grass. The silence is the loudest thing.

Croick Church, Sutherland is one of the most affecting Clearances sites in the country. In May 1845, ninety people from Glencalvie took shelter in the churchyard here after their landlord evicted them. Before leaving for emigration ships, they scratched messages into the diamond panes of the east window. Those words remain visible today: “Glencalvie people the wicked generation,” “Glencalvie is a wilderness blow,” and simple names — the last written record of a community that ceased to exist. A single-track road from Ardgay leads to Croick. The church is always open.

The Strathnaver Museum in Bettyhill, Sutherland, tells the full story of the Sutherland Clearances. Housed in a converted church, it holds records, maps, and personal accounts of the families cleared from Strathnaver. Historic Environment Scotland maintains the ruins of the Rosal township, a short walk from the museum. Ten families lived in Rosal in 1814. By 1820 it was rubble. You can walk through what remains. The museum opens seasonally from April to October.

Boreraig and Suisnish, Isle of Skye sit about five miles from the road, across open moorland south of Broadford. The ruins of these two townships are among the most atmospheric in Scotland. A memorial cairn stands at Boreraig. The walk takes you across the same ground the 600 evicted people crossed — in reverse — carrying everything they owned.

Sculptor Gerald Laing created the Emigrant Statue in Helmsdale, Sutherland. It stands at the harbour from which many cleared families departed. The bronze figures of a man, woman, and child with their few possessions represent every family who walked away from their home. A wall behind the statue carries the names of the communities they came from.

The National Trust for Scotland visitor centre at Glencoe — reached via Fort William — tells the story of both the 1692 Massacre and the 19th century clearances. Standing in the empty valley, you understand why writers called the Clearances a second massacre: not quick, not dramatic, but just as final.

The Legacy of the Clearances for the Scottish Diaspora

The Highland Clearances created the Scottish diaspora. Every person of Scottish descent living outside Scotland today is, in some measure, a consequence of those evictions. The communities that grew up in Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, Otago, and the Carolinas did not come from voluntary migration alone. They came from necessity, loss, and displacement.

The Gaelic language travelled with the emigrants. In Cape Breton, it survived longer than in many parts of Scotland itself, because tight, isolated communities kept it alive. Traditional music — pipe music, Gaelic songs, fiddle styles — crossed the Atlantic with the emigrants. Some of it came back to Scotland centuries later, carried home by diaspora descendants.

Today, a land reform movement in Scotland argues that the concentration of Highland land in the hands of a small number of private estates is a direct legacy of the Clearances. Around two-thirds of Scotland’s land belongs to fewer than 500 people. The argument about who should own the Highlands is not finished.
