World Champion Highland Dancer Dances the Sword Dance
Gareth Mitchelson is a renowned Highland dancer and choreographer, having won the Senior World Highland Dancing title four times. He has performed all over the world at various events, and has been the director of the Celtic Spirit Dance Company since 1985.
Today, we take a closer look at his impressive career in Highland dancing, as well as his charity work for Action Duchenne and the Eileen McCallum Trust.Gareth Mitchelson began Highland dancing while still in school, as a member of the British Caledonian Airways pipes and dance corps.
Over the years he has won many awards, including four Senior World Highland Dancing titles between 1985-1988; each of these were achieved during the Cowal Gathering in Dunoon on the last Saturday of August each year. As part of his professional efforts with Celtic Spirit Dance Company, Gareth has choreographed pieces for numerous festivals and royal performances across Scotland, written music for several Scottish dance traditions, and appeared at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles twice.
Gareth is passionate about preserving the traditional forms of Scottish dance, and through Celtic Spirit he has worked to make them more accessible to the public. The company blends traditional and contemporary styles together, creating a modern twist on age-old dances. He is also an active member of many professional organizations such as Tayside Highland Dancing Association, British Association of teachers of Dance, United Kingdom Alliance, SOBHD (as an adjudicator since 1988), and Scottish Dance Traditions (where he serves as director). In addition to his career in Highland dancing, Gareth and his wife Donna have been campaigning for Duchenne muscular dystrophy awareness and research since their son was diagnosed with the condition in 2008.
He has used his platform to support Action Duchenne and the Eileen McCallum Trust, going so far as creating a website (toeandheel.com), designing Highland dance pumps, releasing a series of teaching DVDs, and creating software scrutineering packages for major Highland dancing events worldwide. Gareth Mitchelson is an amazing dancer who works hard to promote Scottish dance traditions both professionally and personally – we’d like to take this opportunity to thank him for all he does! Scottish Baby Dance – Dressed in a kilt and bow tie, a wee young Scottish lad stole the show with his dancing at a wedding reception. At first, only a few people noticed the toddler on the dance floor near some of the dining tables, waving his arms along to the rhythm of the music. His face was serious as he continued his performance, a mixture of cute and utter focus, prompting a crowd to gather around him.
