Who lives in Duart Castle now?
Duart Castle is presently the home of Sir Lachlan Maclean, Twenty-eighth Chief of the Clan Maclean. Located on a clifftop overlooking the Sound of Mull, the castle has been owned by Clan Maclean since the 13th century. It has remained a family home for centuries and is now under the care of Sir Lachlan and his wife, Mrs Marcella Maclean.
Sir Lachlan is an active administrator in the governance of Duart Castle, ensuring its preservation through careful maintenance and restoration. The castle also hosts a number of events each year including weddings, special occasions, fundraisers, and other public gatherings. Sir Lachlan is particularly keen to promote local craftsmen with his patronage of traditional trades related to building and maintaining castles such as stone masonry, carpentry and joinery.
The castle’s interior reflects Sir Lachlan’s love of history and culture, with the Great Hall featuring fine examples of Maclean clan portraits and tartans. The grounds are also home to a sculpture garden that includes several works by Sir Lachlan himself.
The Macleans have lived in Duart Castle for almost 800 years, proudly exhibiting their ancient heritage through its walls. Sir Lachlan’s occupancy demonstrates his commitment to continuing this legacy and ensuring his family’s home remains safe for future generations.
