When Should I Visit The Scottish Highlands?

The Honest Truth About When to Visit the Highlands

Every travel site ranks May-September as “best” and November-February as “avoid.” That’s oversimplified to the point of being wrong. The Highlands aren’t a beach holiday — the “best” time depends entirely on what you want to experience.

  • Late September is the sweet spot most people miss. Tourists have gone home, midges have died off, autumn colours are starting, and accommodation is available without pre-booking. The weather is no worse than July — Scotland’s summer is famously unreliable anyway.
  • June has the longest days and the worst midges. Twenty hours of daylight sounds magical until you’re swatting clouds of biting insects at 10pm. If you visit in June, stay on the coast where the breeze keeps midges away. Inland glens in calm weather are unbearable.
  • Winter in the Highlands is genuinely harsh — and genuinely magnificent. Snow-capped Munros, frozen lochs, and empty roads. But single-track roads can close, many B&Bs shut for the season, and daylight runs from 9am to 3:30pm. It’s not for casual visitors, but it’s unforgettable for prepared ones.
  • April is underrated for walking. The hills are clear of snow (mostly), midges haven’t arrived, paths are quiet, and spring lambs dot every glen. The only downside is unpredictable rain — but that’s every month in Scotland.
