Scotland has almost 800 islands clustered around its coastline, each with its own distinct appeal.

What the Island Lists Always Get Wrong
Every “best Scottish islands” list features Skye, Mull, and Islay. They deserve their place. But these lists create a self-fulfilling cycle where the famous islands get more visitors and the extraordinary ones stay invisible.
- Eigg is a better experience than Skye for most visitors. Eigg is community-owned, has an iconic ridge climb (An Sgùrr), singing sands on its beach, and a population under 100. The ferry from Mallaig takes 90 minutes and you arrive somewhere genuinely special. Skye is beautiful but crowded; Eigg is beautiful and peaceful.
- Visit Orkney before Shetland unless you’re a birdwatcher. Both are extraordinary, but Orkney’s Neolithic sites (Skara Brae, Ring of Brodgar, Maeshowe) give it a depth of human history that Shetland can’t match. Shetland wins for wildlife — puffins, otters, and the largest gannet colony in Britain.
- Colonsay is Scotland’s most underrated island. Two pubs, a gin distillery, a 14th-century priory, empty beaches, and only 135 residents. The ferry from Oban runs three times a week, which keeps it blissfully uncrowded. In spring, the Colonsay House gardens are among the best in Scotland.
- Timing matters more than choice of island. Any Scottish island in June (long days, warm weather, wildflowers) is spectacular. The same island in November can be harsh. For wildlife, May-July is optimal. For solitude and dramatic weather, October is magnificent if you’re prepared.

A Traveller’s Perspective
Scotland has nearly 800 islands, but most visitors only ever see Skye. That is a shame, because some of the smaller, quieter islands offer experiences that Skye, for all its beauty, simply cannot match. Mull has better wildlife, Islay has better whisky, Harris has better beaches, and Orkney has better ancient history. Each island has its own personality, and discovering which one suits you is part of the adventure.
For a first island trip, Mull is hard to beat — it is easy to reach from Oban (45-minute ferry), has excellent accommodation, and offers everything from castles to eagle-watching. If you want white sand beaches and turquoise water, Harris and Lewis should be top of your list. If ancient history is your thing, Orkney is extraordinary — Skara Brae alone is worth the journey. Allow at least two nights on any island to avoid the feeling of constantly rushing for ferries.
Each island has its own smell, if that does not sound too odd. Mull smells of wet bracken and woodsmoke. Harris smells of peat and salt spray. Islay smells of barley and sea air, with a wisp of whisky smoke drifting from the distilleries. Stepping off the ferry onto a new island and taking that first deep breath is one of the small rituals of Scottish island travel. The air is always cleaner, always sharper, always different from the mainland.
