The Dunmore Pineapple is a decorative building in Dunmore Park near Airth in Stirlingshire, Scotland. It has been rated as “the strangest building in Scotland”.
Dunmore Park, the ancestral seat of the Earls of Dunmore, includes a large country house, Dunmore House, and grounds which include two large walled gardens. Walled gardens were a necessity for any large home in a northern climate in the 18th and 19th centuries, as a high stone or brick wall helped protect the garden from wind and frost and could create a microclimate in which the ambient temperature could be lower. it raised the surrounding landscape several degrees above.
This enabled the cultivation of fruit and vegetables, as well as ornamental plants, which otherwise could not survive so far north. The larger of the two gardens covers about two hectares and is set on a gentle slope to the south. South facing slopes are the ideal location for walled gardens and for growing frost sensitive plants. Along the north edge of the garden, the slope was probably originally steeper. In order for both the top and bottom of the garden to be flat and level at different elevations, it was necessary to fill up the ground on the higher north side (away from the main house) behind a retaining wall some 4.9 meters high) high and 3 ft 3 in 0 m) thick and ran the full length of the north side of the garden.
Walled gardens sometimes included a hollow or double wall with stoves and openings along the side lining the garden to allow heat to escape into the garden and chimneys or chimneys to draw smoke upwards. This is particularly beneficial for fruit trees or vines which, if grown just a few meters from a heated, south-facing wall, could grow even further north than the microclimate of a walled garden would normally allow.
