Is Edinburgh the World’s most haunted capital?

The roots of Edinburgh’s ghostly reputation go back to the 16th century, when King James VI declared that it was “the most haunted city in Britain”. Over the centuries, tales of hauntings and strange phenomena have been reported across Edinburgh’s old town, with many buildings believed to be inhabited by spirits.

One of the more famous examples is Mary King’s Close, a network of underground tunnels beneath Edinburgh’s old town that is said to be home to a number of ghosts. Among them are the well-known phantom piper and an infamous plague spirit, who is said to haunt one of the rooms. Other ghostly residents include Sir George Mackenzie, who is believed to wander the halls of his old mansion, and the legendary ‘White Lady’ of Lauriston Castle.
