What Most Visitors Don’t Know About Fingal’s Cave
Fingal’s Cave on the island of Staffa is one of nature’s most extraordinary creations — a sea cave with hexagonal basalt columns that looks like it was designed by an architect. Getting there requires effort, but the payoff is enormous.
- Boat trips from Oban or Fionnphort (Mull) are the only way to visit. Staffa is uninhabited with no ferry service. Tour boats run from April to October, weather-permitting. Book with Staffa Tours or Turus Mara and check conditions — cancellations due to sea swell are common. Don’t leave it to your last day.
- You can actually walk inside the cave on a natural basalt walkway. Unlike most sea caves, Fingal’s Cave has a natural ledge that allows you to walk deep inside. The acoustics are extraordinary — the sea produces a booming resonance that inspired Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture. Stand inside and listen.
- Combine Staffa with a visit to Iona for one of Scotland’s greatest day trips. Most boat operators offer a Staffa + Iona combined trip. Morning at Fingal’s Cave, afternoon at Iona Abbey — two completely different island experiences in one day. Iona is where Christianity came to Scotland and has an atmosphere of peace that defies description.
- The puffins on Staffa are a bonus from May to early August. Staffa has a thriving puffin colony that most visitors don’t expect. The boat gives you time on the island to see both the cave and the puffins. Bring binoculars and a camera with a decent zoom — the puffins nest on the clifftops above the cave.

Scottish Air Traffic Controller Attempts to Guide a Plane to Safety
Scottish Air Traffic Controller Attempts to Guide a Plane to Safety – For anyone who’s ever had to understand someone with a strong accent, this video is sure to amuse. In it, a Scottish air traffic controller (played by James McAvoy) tries to guide a plane to a safe landing.
The pilot, alas, has a bit of trouble understanding the controller’s thick accent. Hilarity ensues.

A Traveller’s Perspective
Fingal’s Cave on the island of Staffa is one of the most extraordinary natural formations in Scotland. A sea cave formed entirely from hexagonal basalt columns — the same geological formation as the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland — it looks like it was designed by an architect rather than carved by the sea. The acoustics inside the cave give it an eerie, resonant quality that inspired Mendelssohn to compose his Hebrides Overture after visiting in 1829.
Staffa is reached by boat from Mull (Fionnphort or Ulva Ferry) or from Oban and Iona. The trip from Fionnphort takes about an hour. You can usually land on Staffa for about an hour, which is enough time to walk to Fingal’s Cave and explore the island’s remarkable basalt columns. Book with a reputable operator and check weather conditions — sailings are cancelled in rough seas. The island is also home to a large puffin colony in summer, so bring binoculars. The boat ride itself is scenic, passing through waters where dolphins and minke whales are regularly spotted.
Stepping inside Fingal’s Cave, the sound changes immediately. The waves echo off the basalt walls and create a deep, booming resonance that fills the entire cave. The columns rise around you in perfect hexagonal patterns, dark and wet with spray. Light comes in from the cave mouth, green and gold, reflected off the water. The scale of the place is larger than you expect — the ceiling towers above you. It feels less like a cave and more like a natural cathedral, built by the sea over millions of years and open to anyone willing to make the crossing.
