Does anyone live in Drummond Castle?

The Drummond Castle is currently owned by Jane Heathcote-Drummond-Willoughby, the 28th Baroness Willoughby de Eresby and daughter of the 3rd Earl of Ancaster. As of early 2021, she remains the owner of this estate.

Drummond Castle is a magnificent castle in Scotland, located near the village of Crieff. It has been home to the Drummond family for centuries and was originally built in 1491 by Sir John Drummond of Stobhall. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous renovations and additions to become the impressive structure it is today.

The castle was initially built as a traditional tower house, but in 1660 the 3rd Earl of Perth commissioned an extensive remodeling project. This included additions such as a grand new gatehouse, an additional wing, and two round towers; one at each end of the building. These renovations added to the original medieval style of architecture to create an impressive baronial style.

Throughout the centuries, Drummond Castle has remained the ancestral home to the Drummonds, who have owned and maintained it since its construction in 1491. During the 18th Century, they hosted many famous guests at their castle including Bonnie Prince Charlie and King George IV of England. It was also thought that Robert Burns wrote his famous poem ‘Ode to Drummond Castle’ while visiting the castle in 1787.

Drummond Castle was also the scene of some of Scotland’s most pivotal moments in history. In 1552, it witnessed the signing of a treaty between Mary Queen of Scots and Henry VIII, forming an alliance against France. In 1651, the castle was besieged by Oliver Cromwell’s forces during the civil war.

Today Drummond Castle is a popular tourist attraction with many visitors coming to view its impressive architecture and rich history. It is open to the public on specific days every year and there are guided tours of the grounds available which are highly recommended.

The castle is also home to a large collection of artifacts and antiques, as well as a museum which includes various items related to the Drummond family. There are also formal gardens which have been lovingly maintained over the centuries, providing an oasis of tranquility amidst its ancient walls.

Drummond Castle has remained in the possession of the Drummond family since its construction in 1491 and is a testament to their impressive legacy. It’s a great example of Scotland’s proud history and culture, and should not be missed if you ever find yourself near Crieff.
