What Nobody Mentions About Getting to and Around Shetland
Shetland is closer to Norway than to Edinburgh, and it feels that way. This isn’t a quick day trip from the mainland â it’s a genuine expedition. But the remoteness is exactly what makes it extraordinary. You just need to plan accordingly.
- The overnight ferry is an experience in itself. NorthLink ferries from Aberdeen take twelve and a half hours. Book a cabin â sleeping in a reclining chair sounds adventurous until you try it. The ferry arrives at seven in the morning and watching Lerwick appear through the mist is one of Scotland’s most atmospheric arrivals.
- Bring your own car or hire one on arrival â there’s no public transport to speak of. Shetland’s bus service exists but it’s limited and infrequent. To see the best parts â St Ninian’s Isle, Eshaness Cliffs, Jarlshof â you need your own wheels. Book a hire car well in advance; there aren’t many and they sell out in summer.
- Up Helly Aa isn’t the only reason to visit in winter. January’s fire festival is famous, but Shetland in late autumn offers something rarer â the chance to see the Northern Lights from one of Britain’s best viewing spots with almost no light pollution. November through February, on clear nights, the aurora dances above the islands.
- Shetland’s food scene will surprise you. This isn’t a place for bland tourist meals. Shetland lamb and seafood are exceptional â the mussels and crab are among the freshest you’ll find anywhere in Britain. Frankie’s Fish and Chips in Brae has been named the UK’s best. Fjara in Lerwick serves coffee with an ocean view that rivals any Norwegian cafĂŠ.
