Most visitors arrive hoping for clear skies. They want the postcard view — green ridges sharp against blue.

But the people who know Glencoe best will tell you the opposite. This valley was made for cloud and mist. Wait for a gloomy day and it will stop you cold.
A Valley Unlike Anything Else in Britain
Glencoe sits in the Scottish Highlands, roughly 90 miles north of Glasgow on the A82. Most drivers pass through it without stopping. That’s a mistake that takes about four seconds to realise once the mountains close in around you.
The valley was formed by a volcanic super-eruption around 420 million years ago. What collapsed inward became one of the most dramatic glacial valleys in Europe. The mountains here are not gentle — they drop steeply from ridges more than 900 metres high down to a floor barely a mile wide.
The road runs right through the centre. On either side, the slopes rise almost vertically. In mist, the summits disappear entirely.
The Three Sisters and What They Are
The most famous view in Glencoe is a trio of rocky ridges known as the Three Sisters. They’re not separate mountains — they’re three great spurs reaching down from the ridge of Bidean nam Bian, the highest peak in Argyll.
Their Gaelic names are Beinn Fhada, Gearr Aonach, and Aonach Dubh. In English: the Long Mountain, the Short Ridge, and the Dark Ridge. Locals have used these names for centuries.
On clear days, the ridges are striking. In low cloud — when white mist fills the gaps between them and only the rock faces are visible — they become something close to surreal. That’s when most photographers stop the car.
Glen Etive: The Road Fewer People Take
Running south from Glencoe is Glen Etive — a narrow single-track road that follows a river down to a sea loch. If it looks familiar, you may have seen it in the James Bond film Skyfall. The MI6 Aston Martin scene was filmed here.
Glen Etive is quieter than Glencoe itself and, many regulars argue, just as beautiful. The river has natural pools for swimming in summer. Red deer come down to the water’s edge in the evening.
The glen dead-ends at Loch Etive after about 15 miles, with no through route. Take the detour if you have time. It’s worth it.

The Walk That Most Visitors Miss
The Lost Valley — known in Gaelic as Coire Gabhail — is hidden from the road. You’d never know it was there unless someone told you.
To reach it, park at the layby near the Three Sisters viewpoint and follow the path down to the River Coe, then up through a narrow gorge. After about 45 minutes of walking, the gorge opens onto a flat hidden plateau completely surrounded by mountains. It’s the kind of place that makes people go quiet.
The path involves some scrambling over rocks near the river crossing. Most reasonably fit adults can manage it. The views back down the gorge toward the main valley are among the best on foot anywhere in Scotland.
When to Visit and What to Bring
Glencoe is worth visiting in every season. In autumn, the bracken turns a deep rust-orange across the lower slopes. In winter, snow sits on the ridges for weeks and the valley takes on a blue-grey quality unlike anything in summer. Spring brings new green but the peaks can still carry snow until May.
Whatever time of year you go, bring waterproofs. The weather changes quickly here and rain arrives without much warning. A dry morning can become a full Highland downpour by noon.
Don’t let that put you off. In Glencoe, rain is not a reason to leave. It’s usually a reason to stop and watch.
Planning Your Visit
The Glencoe Visitor Centre is run by the National Trust for Scotland and sits at the western end of the valley. It has parking, a café, and staff who can advise on walks and current conditions. It’s the best starting point if you’ve never been before.
Glencoe Village is at the foot of the valley, a small community on the shore of Loch Leven. It has accommodation, a pub, and a local museum. Staying in the village puts you right at the door of the Highlands.

What is the best time to visit Glencoe in Scotland?
Glencoe is dramatic year-round, but autumn (September to November) offers the richest colours and fewer crowds. Winter brings snow to the ridges and a raw beauty that experienced visitors rate very highly. Summer is green and accessible but can be busy.
Where exactly is Glencoe in Scotland?
Glencoe is in the Scottish Highlands, on the A82 approximately 17 miles south of Fort William and 90 miles north of Glasgow. The valley stretches for roughly five miles from Glencoe Village to the mountain pass at the Altnafeadh car park.
How long do you need in Glencoe?
Allow a minimum of three to four hours to drive the valley and stop at the main viewpoints. For the Lost Valley walk, allow a full day. To explore Glen Etive, the visitor centre, and surrounding peaks, two days is ideal.
Is Glencoe suitable for first-time visitors to Scotland?
Absolutely. The A82 road runs the full length of the valley, so even non-walkers get stunning views from the car. The Three Sisters viewpoint is a short walk from a layby. The Lost Valley walk suits anyone reasonably fit with good footwear.
Glencoe is one of those places that gets under your skin. People who’ve been once almost always come back. The landscape doesn’t reveal itself all at once — it rewards attention, and it rewards returning.
