A land of changing skies, cool breezes, and four seasons in a day
Scotland’s weather is famously unpredictable—but that’s part of the adventure. It’s often said you can experience all four seasons in a single day, and many visitors discover it’s true. The country has a temperate maritime climate, which means it’s generally cool, damp, and breezy, with mild winters, fresh summers, and plenty of dramatic skies.

Rain is common but varies by region. The west coast and Highlands, including places like Glencoe and Fort William, receive the most rain—over 3,000 mm annually in some areas. The wettest months tend to be from October to January, when Atlantic weather systems roll in. In contrast, the east coast—with cities like Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Dundee—is much drier, averaging around 650 to 850 mm of rainfall each year. When you’re ready to plan your Scottish adventure, our Scotland trip planning guide has all you need to get started.

Winter (December to February) is chillier, with average temperatures around 0°C to 5°C (32–41°F). Snow is more likely in the Cairngorms and northern Highlands, which become a wonderland for walkers and winter photographers. In cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh, snow is lighter and short-lived.

Spring (March to May) is often dry and bright, especially in the east. May is a favourite month for locals and visitors alike—fewer crowds, blooming wildflowers, and fewer midges. Autumn (September to November) brings misty glens, colourful forests, and clear skies—ideal for visiting castles or driving the North Coast 500.
