What Is The One Thing You Should Absolutely Not Forget For Your Scotland Trip?

What Nobody Tells You to Pack for Scotland

Every packing list for Scotland mentions a waterproof jacket. That’s obvious. What they don’t mention are the things you’ll actually wish you’d brought — the items that separate a comfortable trip from a soggy, blistered, midge-bitten one.

  • Bring waterproof trousers, not just a jacket. Scottish rain comes sideways. Your top half stays dry while your jeans are soaked through in twenty minutes. Lightweight waterproof overtrousers weigh nothing and save every outdoor day. Scots don’t leave home without them.
  • Midges are real — bring Smidge repellent. DEET works but stinks. Smidge is the Scottish-made repellent that actually works against Highland midges. Buy it before you arrive — it sells out in rural shops during summer. A midge head net costs £5 and is worth every penny.
  • Your phone charger won’t fit Scottish sockets. Scotland uses UK Type G plugs (three rectangular pins). Universal adapters from Amazon cost £4. Without one, you’re carrying a dead phone by day two. Pack two adapters — one always ends up in a hotel.
  • Broken-in walking boots, not new ones. Scotland’s terrain punishes new footwear. Wet grass, muddy paths, and rocky trails will give you blisters within an hour in untested boots. Wear your boots for at least three walks before the trip. Your feet will thank you on Ben Nevis.
