What Makes a Perfect Loch Lomond Day Trip

Loch Lomond is 30 minutes from Glasgow, making it Scotland’s most accessible escape. But a “quick day trip” can easily become a frustrating experience if you don’t know which side of the loch to visit or where to eat.

  • Go to the east side (Balmaha) for walking, west side (Luss) for scenery. Balmaha has the best walking trails and the ferry to Inchcailloch island. Luss has the prettier village and better loch views. Choose based on what you want to do — trying to do both in one day means a long drive around the bottom of the loch.
  • The Oak Tree Inn in Balmaha is the best pub lunch on the loch. Overlooking the water with outdoor seating and good ale. It fills up after 12:30 on weekends, so arrive early or book. The food is proper pub food, not tourist fare, and the portions are generous.
  • Rent a kayak or paddleboard at Milarrochy Bay. Seeing Loch Lomond from water level, surrounded by mountains, is a completely different experience from the shore. Rentals are available from spring through autumn. No experience needed — the bay is sheltered and calm.
  • Leave by 3pm to avoid the A82 traffic back to Glasgow. The road along the west side of Loch Lomond narrows at Tarbet and creates bottlenecks on sunny Sunday afternoons. Leaving before the rush means a pleasant 40-minute drive instead of a grinding 90-minute crawl.

A Traveller’s Perspective

Loch Lomond on a sunny day is hard to beat, especially if you live in Glasgow and need a quick escape. Within an hour of leaving the city you can be sitting on the shore with the mountains reflected in the water and the only sound being the gentle lap of waves. It is the most accessible piece of proper Highland scenery in Scotland, and there is a good reason why Glaswegians treat it as their backyard.

Drive to Balmaha on the east shore for a quieter experience than Balloch in the south. The climb up Conic Hill from Balmaha takes about 90 minutes and gives you a panoramic view over the loch and its islands that is worth every step. For a lakeside lunch, the Oak Tree Inn at Balmaha has good pub food and outdoor tables. If you want to get on the water, kayak hire from the east shore is excellent. Go on a weekday if possible — summer weekends can get busy at the popular spots.

Sitting on the shore at Balmaha on a still summer evening, the loch turns to glass. The mountains on the far side are reflected so perfectly that you could turn the photograph upside down and not know the difference. The air smells of pine needles and fresh water. A heron stands motionless in the shallows. Midges are the only irritation — bring repellent. But even the midges cannot ruin the feeling of being somewhere this peaceful, this close to a major city.
