The Last of the Mohicans: Scotland’s Royal Scots Dragoon Guards
Scotland’s Royal Scots Dragoon Guards – Since the 1678 formation of Scotland’s most senior and only regular cavalry regiment, The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (RSDG), the unit has been at the forefront of military history and Pipe music. In 1972, their haunting version of “Amazing Grace” rocketed to the top of charts all around the world. After 75 years as a tank regiment, The RSDG has re-rolled to Light Cavalry and moved from Germany to Fife.
As the Light Cavalry Regiment of choice, The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards make up the main armoured force for the 7th Armoured Brigade, The Famous Desert Rats. They are currently undergoing training to prepare them for their new role at the forefront of the British Army’s organisation, primarily as a mounted combat unit, but also working alongside other nations’ armies around the world.
Dougie MacLean’s 1990 album “The Search” featured his famous piece “The Gael” which was later adapted by Trevor Jones as the main theme to The Last of the Mohicans (1992). His first album included “Caledonia”, honoring Scotland’s longstanding military heritage.
As Scotland’s senior regiment and only regular cavalry regiment, The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards have been an integral part of the nation’s history and will continue to serve their country proudly in their new role as Light Cavalry.
