The National Wallace Monument is a tower standing on the shoulder of the Abbey Craig, a hilltop overlooking Stirling in Scotland. It commemorates Sir William Wallace, a 13th- and 14th-century Scottish hero.
The tower is open to the public for an admission fee. Visitors approach by foot from the base of the crag on which it stands. On entry there are 246 steps to the final observation platform, with three exhibition rooms within the body of the tower. The tower is not accessible to disabled visitors.
In the Victorian era there was an increased interest in Scotland’s past and a desire to build monuments to famous Scots. The first memorial to William Wallace was erected at Dryburgh (in the Scottish Borders) in 1814, and as early as 1818 there were proposals to construct a national memorial to remember Scotland’s hero. The location was the subject of great debate, with Stirling eventually chosen as it was the site of Wallace’s greatest military success.
The National Wallace Monument was designed by the Scottish architect J.T. Rochead, whose designs can still be viewed today in the Stirling Archives.
On Monday 24th June 1861, the laying of the foundation stone took place, and the Monument was opened to the public in 1869.
