Off the Beaten Track in Scotland: Six Wild Places the Guidebooks Skip

Here are six places that sit well beyond the tourist trail.

Sandwood Bay, Sutherland

On Scotland’s far north-west coast, Sandwood Bay is reached only on foot — a four-mile track over peat moorland from the car park at Blairmore, with no road, no building, and often no signal along the way. Most walkers take three to four hours there and back.

The reward is one of the finest beaches in Britain: a mile of pale pink sand backed by dunes, with the sea stack Am Buachaille rising offshore. Legend holds the bay is haunted by a bearded sailor, said to be the ghost of a seaman lost when a Polish ship wrecked here — locals have reported sightings for well over a century.

Good to know: pack food and water, wear proper boots, and allow extra time if the weather turns — there’s no shelter en route.

St Kilda, Outer Hebrides

St Kilda is the most remote part of the British Isles ever permanently inhabited, lying some 40 miles west of the Outer Hebrides. A Gaelic-speaking community survived here for at least 4,000 years on little more than seabirds, oats, and sheer stubbornness — before the last 36 islanders voted to leave on 29 August 1930, worn down by a brutal winter and a way of life no longer sustainable.

Today it’s one of Britain’s only dual UNESCO World Heritage Sites, recognised for both its human history and its wildlife — the cliffs hold the UK’s largest colony of Atlantic puffins and the world’s largest gannet colony.

Good to know: access is by boat from Harris or Skye, weather-dependent and often booked months ahead — this is a bucket-list trip, not a spontaneous one.

Falls of Glomach, Kintail

Deep in Kintail, the Falls of Glomach drop 113 metres in a single leap — one of the highest waterfalls in Britain, and by most accounts its most dramatic. Reaching them means a full day’s hike, typically five to six hours round trip from Morvich over the Bealach na Sroine, through wild hill country where golden eagles and red deer are a common sight.

The name comes from the Gaelic glòmach, meaning “hazy” — an apt description, since the falls are so often wrapped in their own mist.

Good to know: this is serious hillwalking, not a stroll — proper boots, an OS map, and a full weather check are essential, and mobile signal is unreliable.

Isle of Eigg, Small Isles

Eigg is barely five miles long, but it holds an outsized story. Bought by its own residents in a landmark 1997 community buyout, the island became, in 2008, the first place in the world to run entirely off a self-sufficient renewable energy grid — powered by wind, hydro, and solar, with no cable to the mainland at all.

Above it all rises An Sgùrr, a 393-metre pitchstone ridge — the largest of its kind in Britain — with views across to Rum and Skye from the top. Down at the Bay of Laig, the “Singing Sands” squeak underfoot on dry days, a quartz-sand quirk locals are rightly proud of.

Good to know: the ferry from Mallaig runs year-round, but day-trip times are limited — check the CalMac timetable before you plan your day.

Glen Lyon, Perthshire

Glen Lyon runs for over 30 miles through Perthshire and is often called Scotland’s finest glen — yet it sees a fraction of the visitors that Glencoe does. Standing stones, drovers’ roads, and old shieling sites trace a pattern of settlement that stretches back millennia, largely undisturbed.

At the glen’s eastern end, in the churchyard at Fortingall, stands the Fortingall Yew — possibly the oldest living thing in Europe. Estimates of its age range from 2,000 to as much as 5,000 years; even at the conservative end, it was already ancient when the Romans arrived in Scotland.

Good to know: Fortingall is an easy detour off the A827 near Kenmore, making it one of the more accessible “hidden” stops on this list — pair it with a slow drive up the glen itself.

A Different Side of Scotland

The castles and lochs earn their fame honestly. But Scotland’s quieter corners hold something the postcards can’t — scale, weather, and a sense of time that hasn’t been smoothed over for visitors. These places haven’t been shaped for tourism. They’re simply still there, waiting for anyone willing to walk a little further.
