Thanks to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, people in Scotland have a legal right to access most land and inland water. This includes pitching a tent on unenclosed land such as moorlands, forests, loch shores, and many coastal areas—so long as you follow a few simple rules.
✅ What Are the Wild Camping Rules in Scotland?
- Leave no trace – Take your rubbish home, bury human waste far from water sources, and don’t damage plants or trees.
- Stay discreet – Use small tents and camp in groups of no more than two or three tents.
- One or two nights max – Move on after a short stay to avoid overuse.
- Avoid farmland and private gardens – Unless you have permission.
- Respect others and wildlife – Keep noise low and be aware of nearby homes or livestock.
Some areas, such as parts of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, require permits for wild camping due to high visitor numbers. Always check local guidance before you go. To time your trip right, see our guide on choosing the best season for your Scotland trip — late spring and early autumn are often the sweetest spots for wild camping.
