How to make the best Scottish shortbread
Scottish Shortbread is a classic dessert that can be found in homes and bakeries throughout Scotland. Mr. Paul’s Pantry offers one of the best recipes for this delicious treat.
Making Scottish Shortbread is surprisingly easy and requires just four simple ingredients: plain flour, butter, sugar, and a pinch of salt. The recipe begins by sifting the flour into a bowl and then rubbing in the butter until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. This mixture is then stirred together with the sugar and salt to create a thick paste, which can be kneaded lightly if desired.
Once ready, the dough should be rolled out to a 1/2 inch thickness or so, and then cut out into rectangles or circles. Finally, the shortbread can be placed on a lined baking sheet and baked for about 20 minutes at 160ºc/320ºf or Gas 3.
The result is a delicious sweet treat that’s crunchy on the outside and crumbly on the inside. Granulated sugar is recommended in this recipe for an added crunch, but other variations such as caster sugar also work well.
