The Highlands Reality Check Most Visitors Need

The Scottish Highlands are staggeringly beautiful, no question. But they’re also vast, remote, and surprisingly demanding on unprepared visitors. Every year, tourists underestimate the distances, overestimate the infrastructure, and end up frustrated instead of enchanted. Don’t be one of them.

  • Distances look short on the map but take twice as long. Fort William to Inverness is eighty miles. Google says ninety minutes. In reality, single-track roads, tourist traffic, sheep, and photo stops mean two and a half hours minimum. Plan for half the daily mileage you’d cover in England or you’ll spend your holiday behind the wheel.
  • Fill your tank whenever you see a petrol station. Once you leave the A9 corridor, stations become scarce and expensive. Some close at six in the evening. Running low on fuel near Torridon or Knoydart isn’t an adventure — it’s a genuine problem. Keep the tank above half at all times.
  • Accommodation books out months ahead. The Highlands have limited bed stock. If you’re visiting between May and September, book accommodation three to six months in advance — especially for Skye, Glencoe, and the NC500 route. Turning up and hoping to find a room rarely works.
  • The weather is part of the experience, not something to avoid. Rain in the Highlands creates the waterfalls, the mist-wrapped peaks, and the impossibly green glens. If you wait for sunshine to explore, you might wait all week. Invest in proper waterproofs and embrace it — some of the most dramatic Highland moments happen in the rain.
