Activists forced a lockdown at Edinburgh Castle by breaking into the display housing The Stone of Destiny.

During a protest addressing the cost of living crisis in Scotland, demonstrators allegedly shattered the glass case enclosing the Stone of Destiny.

The group responsible for the attack identified themselves as This Is Rigged, a campaign advocating for action on the economic challenges faced because of the cost of living crisis.

Edinburgh Castle Closed as Activists Break Stone of Destiny Case

Edinburgh Castle was placed in lockdown as activists smashed the case containing The Stone of Destiny.

Campaign group This Is Rigged claimed to be behind the attack.

A spokesperson said: “We targeted the Stone of Destiny because Scotland is at a critical point in its history. The reality of our present day is deeply concerning: A quarter of Scotland’s population have experienced food insecurity in the past year. A thousand children were rushed to hospital with acute symptoms of malnutrition.

The Stone of Destiny is an ancient symbol of Scotland’s monarchy, used for centuries in the inauguration of its kings. Seen as a sacred object, its earliest origins are now unknown. In 1296, King Edward I of England seized the stone from the Scots, and had it built into a new throne at Westminster.

Scottish accent vs Irish accent

Both the Scottish and Irish accents have distinctive features that make them distinct from one another. The Scottish accent is generally known for its soft, rolling “r” sound and its use of dropped consonants, while the Irish accent is characterized by a more up-and-down rhythm with longer vowels and harder consonant sounds.
