Ecclefechan Tart Recipe: Scotland’s Rich Fruit and Nut Tart

Sharing is caring!

The Ecclefechan tart is a small, intensely rich tart of dried fruit, walnuts and a buttery treacle-like filling set in shortcrust pastry. It takes its name from the Dumfriesshire village of Ecclefechan in the Scottish Borders, and in recent decades it has grown from a local speciality into a Christmas favourite across Britain.

The story behind the tart

Ecclefechan is a small village near Lockerbie, best known as the birthplace of the historian and essayist Thomas Carlyle. The tart named after it belongs to a family of British “border tarts” and became widely known after Scottish supermarkets began stocking it at Christmas. Like a Scottish cousin of the American pecan pie, it pairs a rich, buttery, sugar-and-egg filling with fruit and nuts — but uses walnuts and dried vine fruit rather than pecans.

Ingredients (makes one 20cm tart, or 12 small tarts)

For the pastry:

• 200g plain flour
• 100g cold butter, diced
• 1 tbsp caster sugar
• 1 egg yolk and 1–2 tbsp cold water

For the filling:

• 75g butter, melted
• 150g soft light brown sugar
• 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
• 2 eggs, beaten
• 200g mixed dried fruit (raisins, sultanas, currants)
• 75g walnuts, roughly chopped

The method

1. Make the pastry. Rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs, stir in the sugar, then bind with the egg yolk and a little cold water. Wrap and chill for 30 minutes.

2. Line the tin. Roll out and line a 20cm tart tin (or cut rounds for a tartlet tray). Chill again for 15 minutes, then blind-bake at 180°C for about 12 minutes.

3. Make the filling. Whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, vinegar and beaten eggs. Stir in the dried fruit and chopped walnuts.

4. Bake. Spoon the filling into the pastry case and bake at 180°C for 25–30 minutes (12–15 minutes for small tarts), until set with a slight wobble and a golden top. Cool in the tin.

How to serve it

Ecclefechan tart is best served just warm or at room temperature, cut into small slices — it is very rich. A spoonful of lightly whipped cream, crème fraîche or vanilla ice cream balances the sweetness beautifully. It keeps well in a tin, which is part of why it became such a popular Christmas bake.

A dish worth understanding, not just eating

Few tarts carry their birthplace in their name so plainly. Making an Ecclefechan tart is a small taste of the Scottish Borders — thrifty, fruit-and-nut baking turned into something genuinely festive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you pronounce Ecclefechan?

It is usually said “eck-uhl-FEH-khan”, with the “ch” sounded softly as in “loch”.

What does Ecclefechan tart taste like?

Rich, buttery and sweet, with chewy dried fruit and crunchy walnuts in a soft, treacle-like filling — similar in spirit to pecan pie but distinctly British.

Why is it linked to Christmas?

Its fruit-and-nut filling and long keeping qualities made it a natural festive bake, and Scottish supermarkets popularised it as a Christmas product.

Can I make it as small tartlets?

Yes — line a tartlet tray with pastry rounds and reduce the baking time to about 12–15 minutes.
