Discover Ullapool – Ullapool’s history stretches back thousands of years, with evidence of human settlements along the coast and in some cases on the roadside. Stone circular foundations can still be seen around Rhue and other local sites, some dating as far back as two thousand years. Brochs (old stone forts) are also still in existence at Dun Logie and Rhiroy on Lochside, as well as Strathkanaird, Coigach and Assynt. About a mile north of the village is Dun Canna, an ancient fort system estimated to be around 2,500 years old. At low tide, it’s even possible to spot a Viking fish trap that was built in the 8th Century in the bay below.
The Norse heritage can still be seen in many place names around Ullapool, with some believing that ‘Ulla-Bolstadr’ (which translates to ‘Ulla’s steading’) is where the village gets its name from.
In 1788, the British Fisheries Society commissioned Thomas Telford to build a village and port for the herring fisheries, and many of those original buildings still stand today. Examples include Made in Ullapool, West Highland College and Captain’s Cabin, which were all formerly curing sheds.
Tragically, many communities in this region were affected by the notorious ‘Clearances’ of the 18th and 19th Centuries, when landowners evicted crofters from their homes to make way for more profitable sheep farming.
Ullapool today is a vibrant town with excellent transport links to Inverness and Stornoway, making it an ideal destination for day trips or longer breaks. There are plenty of outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy, including walking the Coastal Path and exploring the stunning countryside. With a fantastic array of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs, there’s something for everyone in Ullapool. The village also plays host to a variety of annual events, such as the Ullapool Book Festival and the Pipe Band World Championships.
For a unique experience, visitors should also consider taking a boat trip out to the Summer Isles. It’s here that you can find stunning white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and an abundance of wildlife. There’s also the chance to spot dolphins, porpoises and even whales in their natural habitat!
The original part of Ullapool is part of Thomas Telford’s original design and contains many buildings that date back hundreds of years. Wandering the streets, you will come across old houses that were used for fishing purposes and churches that have been places of worship for generations. Outside the village, there are a number of archaeological sites such as Iron Age broches and forts as well as abandoned crofts and farmlands which were the result of famine and clearances.
The Ardmair Beach and Bay is a popular spot for tourists, with its smooth flat stones that are perfect for making interesting stone sculptures or ‘skimming’. Another must-see destination is the Rhue Point Lighthouse, which offers stunning sunsets over the Summer Isles. South of Ullapool, the Leckmelm Gardens are a reminder of the old Victorian Estate located at the head of the loch. The gardens were originally used to feed its owners but now contain many unique plants and trees.
Corrieshalloch Falls should also not be missed when visiting Ullapool. This stunning gorge was carved out over millions of years and can be reached after a short walk from the car park.
The Ullapool Museum is also worthy of visit, as it holds much of Lochbroom’s past – both distant and more recent. People with Scottish ancestry have discovered family backgrounds in some of the parish records held there, even finding living relatives in the area.
Finally, the North West GeoPark heading north from the village is a great spot for those interested in geology. Here you can discover more about this landscape, which was described as being the birthplace of modern geological theories. Make sure to look out for signs around the area that tell more and highlight key sites such as Knockan Crag.

Fresh seafood from Loch Duich and locally-produced cheeses from Strathspey can be found all around the area, making it easy to try some of Scotland’s most delicious dishes. With an abundance of whisky distilleries as well, there’s no shortage of delicious tipples to sample.
