What Is Arthur’s Seat?

Arthur’s Seat is an ancient volcano sitting at the heart of Holyrood Park in Edinburgh. It last erupted around 350 million years ago. Since then, glaciers have shaped and worn it into the distinctive hill visible from across the city today.

At 251 metres above sea level, it is the highest point in Edinburgh. From the summit, the city stretches out in every direction, with Holyrood Palace directly below and the Firth of Forth on the northern horizon.

The hill sits inside Holyrood Park — a 650-acre royal park managed by Historic Environment Scotland. The park has been royal land since the 16th century. It is open 24 hours a day, free to enter, and requires no booking or ticket of any kind.

Seen from above, the hill has the shape of a crouching lion. Some historians suggest this shape is part of the origin of the lion rampant on Scotland’s flag. Whether or not that’s accurate, the outline is hard to miss when you approach Edinburgh from the east.

Getting There

Arthur’s Seat is easy to reach on foot from the city centre. From Waverley Station, the walk to the park entrance takes around 20 to 25 minutes. From the Royal Mile, allow 15 minutes to reach the foot of the hill at Holyrood.

By bus, services 6 and 35 stop near the park. There is a free car park on Holyrood Park Road, close to St Margaret’s Loch, if you are arriving by car.

There is no entrance fee, no staff, no barriers. You walk in and start climbing.

The Climb: What to Expect

Several paths lead to the summit. The most popular starts from the car park near Dunsapie Loch on the eastern side of the hill. From there, the summit is around 20 minutes away. The longer route from the Holyrood end of the park takes closer to 45 minutes.

The path is well-worn but uneven. The surface is mostly compacted earth and loose rock. Near the top, the ground becomes more exposed and the final stretch is steep. It is not a technical climb — no ropes or specialist equipment are needed — but it does require some sure-footedness.

The total elevation gain from the lower paths is around 200 metres. Most people in ordinary fitness manage it without difficulty. Children do it regularly. What you should avoid is completely flat-soled footwear: the rocky ground near the summit can be slippery, especially after rain.

On a busy summer day, the path can be congested by 10am. If you want space, go early. Sunrise on a weekday is as good as it gets for a quiet climb. The views at the top are the same regardless of when you go.

The View from the Top

The summit is the whole reason to come.

Holyrood Palace sits directly below to the north-west. Beyond it, the Scottish Parliament building, the Royal Mile, and the Scott Monument are all clearly visible. The New Town spreads out to the north in its grid of Georgian streets. The Firth of Forth runs across the horizon, and on a clear day you can see across to Fife and beyond.

To the east, the Bass Rock is visible — a volcanic stack in the Firth of Forth that holds one of the world’s largest gannet colonies. To the west, Edinburgh Castle sits on its own volcanic rock, and it’s possible to pick out the castle walls from the summit on most days.

There are no railings at the top. No café or information board. No gift shop. The summit is an open rock plateau with the wind and the view and nothing else. That is part of what makes it worth the effort.

What the view does, more than anything, is put the city’s scale into perspective. Edinburgh is compact in a way that isn’t obvious at street level. From up here, you can see how the Old Town and New Town sit side by side, how the parks break up the streets, and how close the water is. It is a city that makes sense from above.

The Best Time to Visit

Arthur’s Seat is open all year round. Each season has something to offer.

Summer (June to August) is the busiest period. The days are long, the weather is at its most reliable, and the views are sharp. The trade-off is crowds. If you visit in summer, go before 9am to avoid the busiest periods.

Spring and autumn are often the better choice. The paths are quieter, the light tends to be more interesting, and the colours in October make the descent through the park particularly good. April and May mornings can produce some of the clearest visibility of the year.

Winter visits are possible but require more preparation. The paths can be icy, the wind at the summit is sharper, and cloud cover can reduce visibility significantly. If the forecast is clear, a winter sunrise from the top is one of the quieter and more memorable experiences Edinburgh offers.

Arthur’s Seat is a traditional gathering point for the Beltane Fire Festival on the evening of 30 April each year — a modern revival of an ancient Celtic celebration. It draws large crowds. If you want the hill to yourself, that is the one evening to avoid it.

Practical Information

Footwear: Walking shoes or trainers with a grip are recommended. Avoid flat-soled shoes or sandals on the rockier upper paths.

Weather: Edinburgh is exposed and the summit amplifies that. Even on a warm city day, it can be cold and windy at the top. Always bring a layer.

Dogs: Allowed throughout Holyrood Park. Keep dogs on a lead near nesting birds in spring.

Toilets: Available at the Holyrood Park Education Centre on Queen’s Drive. There are no facilities on the hill itself.

Photography: Morning light from the east is best for shots of the city. Midday light tends to flatten the view. Sunrise gives you the most interesting conditions and the fewest other people in frame.

Time required: Allow 90 minutes in total for the standard Holyrood route, including the descent. Add more time if you want to explore the wider park or stop at points along the way.

Accessibility: The main summit path is not accessible by wheelchair. The lower paths and road around Holyrood Park are accessible and offer good views of the hill and the park.

What Else to See in Holyrood Park

The summit is the main draw, but the wider park has more to offer if you have time.

St Margaret’s Loch is an artificial loch on the northern side of the park, popular with swans and ducks. It makes a good stopping point on the way back towards the city. The path around it is flat and easy.

The ruins of St Anthony’s Chapel sit on a ridge above the loch. Dating from at least the 15th century, the chapel’s origins are not fully understood. It is a short detour from the main paths and takes around ten minutes to reach from the loch.

Salisbury Crags are the long line of cliffs visible on the western edge of the park. They run roughly parallel to the Royal Mile and offer a different kind of walk — dramatic, with good views across the city, but without the summit climb of Arthur’s Seat itself.

From the park, the Palace of Holyroodhouse is within easy walking distance. As the official Scottish residence of the monarch, it requires a ticket to enter, but the exterior is visible from the park gates and the surrounding area.

Worth the Climb

Arthur’s Seat is one of the few things in Edinburgh that costs nothing and delivers something genuinely hard to find elsewhere — a proper sense of where the city sits in the wider landscape, and how it has grown around the landscape rather than over it.

The climb is short. The view is long. It is the kind of experience that stays with you after the visit is over, and one that changes the way you see Edinburgh when you come back down to street level.
