Why is Glamis Castle famous?
Glamis Castle is one of Scotland’s most famous castles, renowned for its grandeur and its storied past. Belonging to the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne for centuries, Glamis has become part of Scottish history since the time of Mary Queen of Scots, William Shakespeare, and the Jacobite Rebellion. It was also the childhood home of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, which gives it an even greater historical significance.
History of Glamis Castle
Glamis Castle is a majestic castle in Angus, Scotland. It has been the home of the Lyon family since 1372 when Sir John Lyon was granted the lands of Glamis by Robert II of Scotland. According to legend, it’s said that Macbeth killed Duncan I at Glamis Castle in 1040.
In 1445, King James II of Scotland gave the castle to Sir John Lyon as a reward for his loyalty. The castle has remained in the family ever since and is now the ancestral home of Queen Elizabeth’s late mother-in-law, Princess Margaret.
The castle was remodelled by architect William Adam in 1778 and the current structure is largely his work. The castle was damaged by fire in 1640 but was restored to its former glory soon after.
In 1910, Glamis Castle became Scotland’s first seat of state when King George V and Queen Mary stayed there for a week during their visit to Scotland.
Today, Glamis Castle is open to visitors who can explore the castle’s many rooms, enjoy a tour of the grounds, and take part in special events. It is also home to one of Scotland’s most famous ghosts, Earl Beardie, who has been said to haunt the castle since 1520.
