Glamis Castle: The Fairytale Fortress Where Scotland’s Darkest Legends and Royal History Collide

There’s a moment, driving north through the gentle farmland of Angus, when Glamis Castle first appears on the horizon — turrets and pepper-pot towers rising out of the trees like something conjured rather than built. It’s easy to see why, centuries ago, people whispered that this was the castle Shakespeare had in mind when he sent Macbeth spiralling into ambition and madness. Whether or not the Bard ever set foot here, Glamis has spent nearly 700 years earning its reputation as one of Scotland’s most storied — and most haunted — homes.

A hunting lodge, a king’s death, and the start of a dynasty

Long before the pink sandstone chateau-like castle we see today existed, this site was a royal hunting lodge. King Malcolm II reportedly died at Glamis on 25 November 1034, at the age of at least 80 — a death shrouded in enough mystery that it fed centuries of folklore about violence and betrayal on this ground.

The Glamis story as we know it properly begins in 1372, when King Robert II granted the thanage of Glamis to Sir John Lyon in recognition of his loyal service to the Crown. Sir John didn’t just receive land — he married into it too, wedding Princess Johanna Stewart, the King’s own daughter, which instantly elevated Glamis from a simple hunting lodge to a noble seat. That marriage planted the family tree that still lives at Glamis today: the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne have called it their ancestral seat since 1372. 

The tower house that became a French chateau

The castle’s bones date to the 14th century. In 1376, John Lyon, Lord Glamis, rebuilt an existing fortified structure on the site as a simple L-plan tower house — and remarkably, that original tower house still forms the core of the castle standing today. Over the following centuries it was expanded again and again, most dramatically in the 17th century, when Patrick, Lord Glamis, undertook major building works, commemorated in an inscription on the central tower crediting him and his wife, Dame Anna Murray. Historians still debate who designed this transformation — tradition has linked the celebrated English architect Inigo Jones to the work, though Historic Scotland believes the King’s Master Mason, William Schaw, is the more likely hand behind it, given how thoroughly Scottish the finished architecture feels. The result, as one historian put it, is a superb historic residence that resembles an ornate French chateau, filled with beautifully furnished state rooms.

A tale of witchcraft, injustice, and a ghost who still walks

No account of Glamis is complete without the story of Janet Douglas, Lady Glamis — arguably the most tragic figure in the castle’s history. In 1540, Janet and her two sons were accused by King James V of consorting with the devil. The truth was rather less supernatural: James simply wanted Glamis for himself, and the witchcraft charges were a convenient pretext. Despite public outcry, the family was imprisoned in appalling conditions in Edinburgh, and on 17 July 1537, Janet was burned at the stake. Her youngest son was due to face the same fate on turning sixteen — but just days before his execution, King James died, and the boy was spared. 

It’s Janet’s spirit that visitors still speak of today. Known as the White Lady, she’s said to wander the chapel and clock tower, her appearance long believed to be an omen of tragedy for the family. Glamis has, in fact, earned a reputation as one of the most haunted castles in Britain — and the guides who lead tours through its rooms today lean into the eerie stories with real relish, though they tend to steer clear of the castle’s grimmest legend, the so-called “Monster of Glamis,” a tale widely believed to have no basis in truth. 

A childhood home fit for a future Queen

Glamis’s royal connections didn’t end with medieval kings. In the 20th century, the castle became the childhood home of a young woman who would go on to become Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother — and it was here, on the estate she loved for the whole of her life, that her daughter, Princess Margaret, was born in 1930 (though the Queen Mother herself was actually born in London in 1900, only spending her formative years at Glamis, where her ties to the place ran deep). Today, remarkably, the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne still call Glamis home — this is very much a lived-in castle, not a museum piece.

Visiting Glamis today

If you’re planning a visit, Glamis rewards a properly unhurried look — most visitors find three to four hours is about right to take in the castle and grounds. For 2026, the castle is open daily from 20 March to 31 October, 10am to 5pm, with the last tour departing at 4:30pm, and from 1 November to 22 December the grounds and gardens remain accessible Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, for anyone wanting a quieter, crisper walk through the estate.

One practical tip if you’re travelling with anyone who tires easily on their feet: the guided tour covers spiral staircases and uneven historic floors and moves at the group’s pace, so comfortable shoes are essential. Your ticket is generous, too — it includes whatever seasonal exhibition happens to be running that year, at no extra cost. Afterwards, take time in the Italian and walled gardens, and if you’re building a full day of Scottish history, Scone Palace sits close enough to combine both in one trip.
