Secrets, skeletons, and Scotland’s oldest stories lie beneath the stone
Edinburgh Castle may stand proudly above the city, but some of its most fascinating stories are hidden far below. Perched on a 340-million-year-old volcanic rock, this ancient fortress has been continuously occupied for nearly 3,000 years. Beneath its foundations lie traces of prehistoric life, dark dungeons, royal secrets, and wartime hideouts.
So what exactly lies beneath one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks?
Ancient Life Before the Castle
Long before Edinburgh Castle was built, the rock was home to Iron Age communities. Archaeologists have uncovered pottery, early defences, and signs of settlement dating back as far as 900 BC. This makes Castle Rock one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Scotland.
Dungeons, Vaults, and Prisoners
Beneath the castle lie cramped stone vaults once used to hold prisoners—from pirates and spies to captured French soldiers. These dark cells saw centuries of suffering. Some prisoners scratched graffiti into the walls during the 1700s—and their marks remain to this day. 👉 Explore the real Mary King’s Close
Royal Treasures Hidden in the Depths
Scotland’s Crown Jewels were hidden deep inside the castle during times of war and unrest. Alongside them was the legendary Stone of Destiny, once used to crown ancient Scottish kings.
While these treasures were once kept under the castle, the Stone of Destiny is no longer housed there. After being returned to Scotland in 1996, it was recently moved to Perth’s City Hall museum in 2024, where it’s now on permanent display.
Hidden Passages and Ghostly Legends
Many believe the castle is criss-crossed with secret tunnels, including one said to stretch beneath the Royal Mile. According to legend, a young piper once entered the tunnel to explore. His music could be heard above ground—until it suddenly stopped. He was never seen again. Some say his ghost still lingers. 👉 Why is the Royal Mile so famous?

Wartime Bunkers and Forgotten Rooms
In more recent history, parts of the castle were used during the Napoleonic Wars and World War II as military storage and strategic bunkers. While some areas have been explored, others remain sealed off—leaving us to wonder what secrets still lie beneath.
