What happened to Kilchurn Castle?
Kilchurn Castle, located on the banks of Loch Awe in western Scotland, is a remarkable example of 15th century architecture. Built for Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy, the castle was intended to be both a luxurious residence and an imposing stronghold.
As part of his mission to protect nearby lands from Norse raiders, Sir Colin built Kilchurn as a garrison stronghold. The castle featured walls up to 8 feet thick and was surrounded by an outer wall which enclosed an area of about three acres.
For centuries, Kilchurn served as a symbol of strength and power over the surrounding countryside. It saw its fair share of action in Scotland’s turbulent history and was frequently used as a defensive position during the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745.
However, by the end of the 18th century, Kilchurn had begun to fall into disrepair. With no further need for its defense, it was eventually abandoned and left to succumb to nature’s elements.
Today, Kilchurn Castle stands as an impressive reminder of Scotland’s past. Although the castle is overgrown and crumbling, the barracks block remains relatively complete. This makes it the oldest surviving barracks on the British mainland.
Kilchurn Castle continues to be a popular destination for visitors in search of a glimpse into Scottish history. Located within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, the castle provides a unique insight into the past and is a great spot for photographers looking to capture its historical beauty.
