A Beginner’s Guide to Sleeping Under the Stars

Wild camping in Scotland is one of the most rewarding ways to explore the land. But it’s not just about unrolling a sleeping bag and hoping for the best. With the right preparation, you’ll stay safe, dry, warm—and inspired.

What Wild Camping Guides Leave Out

Scotland’s right to roam makes wild camping legal almost everywhere. That’s the exciting part. What nobody tells you is that legal doesn’t mean easy, comfortable, or always welcome. The reality of sleeping rough in Scotland requires more preparation than most blog posts admit.

  • Midges will find you, and they will win. From late May to September, midges descend at dusk near any still water. A midge head net costs £5 and is the difference between sleeping peacefully and lying awake being eaten alive. Don’t leave home without one.
  • The ground is almost never flat and dry. Scotland’s terrain looks green and inviting. Underneath, it’s often boggy, rocky, or sloped. Bring a quality ground mat and test your pitch before dark. A “perfect spot” at 7pm can be a puddle by midnight.
  • Some areas have banned wild camping despite the law. East Loch Lomond introduced a camping management zone requiring permits. Parts of Skye are cracking down informally. Check local bylaws before pitching — the Scottish Outdoor Access Code says “leave no trace,” and too many campers have ruined it for everyone.
  • A bothy is better than a tent in bad weather. Scotland has over 100 mountain bothies — free, unlocked shelters in remote locations maintained by the MBA. They’re basic (no electricity, no running water) but dry. When horizontal rain hits at 2am, a stone roof beats nylon every time.

🎒 Top Tips for Wild Camping in Scotland

1. Pick a spot that matches your ability
Start somewhere with safe terrain and a short walk-in. Try Bonaly Reservoir or Glenfeshie before taking on the remote Fisherfield Forest.

2. Pack layers and waterproofs
Scotland’s weather changes fast. Always bring a warm hat, waterproof trousers, and spare socks—even in summer.

3. Practice your setup
Test your tent and sleep system at home or in your garden. You don’t want to battle the wind on a hilltop without knowing how your pegs work.

4. Keep it lightweight
Avoid bulky gear. Choose a compact tent, a 3-season sleeping bag (or heated bag if you feel the cold), and a foam or inflatable sleep mat.

5. Plan your food
Bring food that’s easy to cook or heat. Dehydrated meals, porridge pots, and flapjacks are camping favourites.

6. Carry a map—and know how to use it
Phones can lose signal or battery. A paper Ordnance Survey map and compass could save your life. The OS Maps app is handy, too, as a backup.

7. Check the forecast
Use the Mountain Weather Information Service before setting off. If storms are coming, postpone your trip.

8. Use “nearly wild” campsites to practise
Places like Long Beach Campsite in Knoydart offer a middle ground: remote and peaceful, but with minimal facilities nearby. When you’re ready to plan your visit, our Scotland trip planning guide is the perfect place to start.
