What Makes Edinburgh Scotland’s Most Romantic City
Edinburgh doesn’t try to be romantic — it just is. The combination of medieval architecture, candlelit restaurants, and atmospheric closes creates an environment that Paris works hard to manufacture. Here’s how to experience Edinburgh’s romantic side properly.
- Book dinner at The Witchery by the Castle. Gothic interiors, candlelight, extraordinary food, and a location at the very top of the Royal Mile next to Edinburgh Castle. It’s been Edinburgh’s most romantic restaurant for decades and still delivers. Book weeks in advance — tables for two are in high demand.
- Walk the Water of Leith at dusk for a hidden-city experience. The riverside path through Dean Village feels like a fairy tale — ancient stone buildings, a millpond, and overhanging trees. At dusk, the streetlights reflect in the water and you’ll feel a hundred miles from a capital city.
- Calton Hill at sunset is Edinburgh’s most romantic viewpoint. The walk takes 10 minutes and the view — Castle, Arthur’s Seat, the Forth — is staggering. Find a spot among the Greek-style monuments and watch the sky change colour over the Old Town spires.
- Stay in a New Town Georgian townhouse, not a modern hotel. Edinburgh’s New Town was built for elegant living and the proportions show it. The Balmoral and The Dunstane Houses are excellent, but smaller B&Bs in Georgian terraces offer the same atmosphere at a fraction of the price.

A Traveller’s Perspective
Johnnie Walker Princes Street on Valentine’s Day is a genuinely impressive venue for a special evening. The rooftop bar with views of Edinburgh Castle, live jazz, and well-crafted cocktails make it one of the most atmospheric spots in the city. Whether you are a whisky enthusiast or not, the experience is polished and memorable without being stuffy.
Book well in advance for Valentine’s events — they sell out. If you cannot get a Valentine’s booking, the regular rooftop bar is open year-round and is just as impressive on any clear evening. Smart casual dress code. For a full evening, combine the rooftop drinks with dinner at one of the restaurants on George Street or Princes Street — Dishoom, The Ivy, and Number One at The Balmoral are all within walking distance. Arrive at sunset for the best castle views.
Standing on the rooftop at Johnnie Walker Princes Street with a cocktail in hand, looking out at Edinburgh Castle floodlit against the night sky, the city spreads below you in a tapestry of — no. The city spreads below you in layers of old stone and warm light. Princes Street Gardens are dark and quiet beneath the terrace. The sound of the city is muffled by height and glass. It is one of those Edinburgh evenings where you feel like you are inside a postcard, except the cold wind on your face reminds you it is very much real.
