Glasgow School of Art
Mackintosh Academy of Art or otherwise known as Glasgow school of Art is a must for lovers of fine architecture. This Art Noveau Building opened in 1909. It confirmed the reputation of the 28-year-old designer Charles Mackintosh as a master of the exterior. Three 20-metre-high bay windows and smaller windows on the east side dominates the he magnificent west facade. This is reminiscent of Scottish castles, but also as an excellent interior. Most famous rooms include the Director’s Room, one of the first of Mackintosh’s “White Rooms”; Art sessions take place at the Mackintosh Room; and the exclusive library and gallery. Student-led tours explore Mackintosh’s work and influence, and include galleries of his furniture and other work.
The Glasgow School of Art is one of Europe’s leading universities for education and research in the creative visual disciplines.
A fire at the Glasgow School of Art’s Mackintosh Building damaged the building significantly On June 15 2018. A major fire restoration project was carried out on 23 May 2014 in the west wing (built between 1907 and 1909) of the building. The cause of the 2018 fire is under investigation by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. The fire occurred while the building was under the day-to-day management of Kier Construction (Scotland) Ltd. The report will be published in due time. The structure is stable and ongoing site cleanup will continue through mid-2021. At this point, the goal is to reduce the current footprint of the site. In parallel with this work, the GSA is considering next steps for the future of the site.
