Edinburgh Takes Second Spot in List of Preferred Holiday Destinations as Brits Opt for ‘Staycations’

Johannes Thomas, the recently appointed CEO of Trivago, highlighted that UK hotel bookings in the third and fourth quarters of the year predominantly feature domestic destinations. He attributed this trend to the high cost of airline tickets, which have seen a significant increase, surpassing 30% since 2019. Ryanair’s recent warning of further winter airfare hikes added to the challenges, although Thomas mentioned a slight plateauing of prices since mid-2023.

Trivago’s UK booking data reveals that seven of the top 10 Christmas 2023 destinations are domestic, with London, Edinburgh and Llandudno ranking as the top three choices. Similarly, Britons are opting to welcome the New Year in the UK, with London, Edinburgh, and Blackpool among the top five destinations for the start of 2024.

Looking ahead to the first half of the next year, the trend continues, with over half of the top 10 holiday destinations in the UK and Ireland preferred by British travelers.

What is the Best Hotel in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, is one of the most vibrant and attractive cities in the UK, attracting millions of travelers every year. Its beautiful mix of Georgian and medieval architecture and its lush green spaces make it a feast for the eyes.

The Old Town’s cobbled streets are amazingly lined with vintage shops, cozy cafes, and museums, while the New Town boasts art galleries, trendy bars, and stores.

If you are planning a trip to Scotland’s capital, the city is definitely going to amaze you with its rare old-world charm, majestic buildings and gardens, and countless fascinating museums.

And before you hop across the city to experience its culture, history, and hospitality, you might ask yourself: what is the best hotel in Edinburgh?
