Americans driving in Scotland
Visiting Scotland as an American tourist may seem overwhelming, but it’s certainly an experience you won’t soon forget. Driving through the winding roads of the UK can be a bit intimidating at first, but when you make your way to Loch Ness and the Culloden Battlefield, the views and scenery will take your breath away.
Located near Inverness, Scotland, these are must-see destinations for anyone visiting the area. If you’re looking for an adventure and a truly unique experience, put Scotland on your list of places to visit. You won’t regret it!
How difficult is it for an American to drive in Scotland?
Driving in Scotland can be a bit of a challenge for Americans, as the roads and laws are different from what they may be used to. The speed limit is lower than most other countries and drivers must pay attention to road signs and traffic lights. Traffic signals are placed on the left side of the road instead of the right side and all drivers must stay in the left lane when driving on dual carriageways. Additionally, all drivers must abide by the British Road Rules and should familiarize themselves with common terms such as slip roads and roundabouts before taking to the roads.
All vehicles must display a minimum of third-party insurance and those under 25 must obtain an International Driving Permit and carry the passport photo page from the permit while driving. Finally, Scotland is a country of rural roads and narrow lanes, so drivers must take extra caution when navigating these passages. Ultimately, although there are some differences to be aware of, with a little bit of research and preparation, Americans should not have too much trouble driving in Scotland.
