What Driving in Scotland Is Actually Like
Driving guides tell you to drive on the left and watch for roundabouts. The real challenges in Scotland are narrower roads than you have ever seen, sheep with no concept of traffic, and locals who drive single-track roads at speeds that will terrify you.
- Master passing places on day one. Single-track roads have passing places every few hundred metres. If the oncoming car is closer to the passing place, pull in and let them pass. If the passing place is on the right, stop opposite it — never cross to the wrong side. Getting this wrong causes tailbacks and irritation.
- Do not overtake on single-track roads. If a car ahead is slower than you would like, be patient. They will pull into a passing place to let you past when they can. Flashing your lights or tailgating is considered extremely rude in the Highlands and will mark you as a tourist who does not understand the roads.
- Fuel up before leaving major towns. Petrol stations in the Highlands can be 40-50 miles apart. On the NC500, the stretch between Tongue and Durness has no fuel at all. Fill your tank whenever you see a station, even if it is half full. Highland petrol costs 10-20p per litre more than the Central Belt.
- Add 50% to every Google Maps estimate. Google assumes constant speed on clear roads. Scottish roads involve livestock, single-track passing, photo stops, and slow-moving caravans. A two-hour Google estimate in the Highlands is three hours in reality. Plan shorter daily distances and you will enjoy the drive instead of racing against the clock.

Firstly, the legal driving age in the UK is 17. All UK drivers must carry their driving licence, insurance and vehicle registration documents when behind the wheel.
When it comes to speed limits, vary depending on the type of road you are driving on and whether you’re in an urban or rural area. Typically, motorways have a speed limit of 70mph, dual carriageways 60mph, single carriageways 50-60mph and built-up areas 30mph.
