What Packing Lists Never Tell You About Scotland
Every Scotland packing guide tells you to bring layers and waterproofs. That’s obvious. What they don’t tell you is what catches visitors off guard once they’re actually here — and it’s rarely the rain.
- Bring midge repellent or regret it from May to September. Scottish midges are tiny biting insects that swarm near water in the Highlands. Smidge or Avon Skin So Soft are the locals’ choices. Without it, evening walks near any loch become unbearable.
- Pack a head torch, not just a phone torch. If you’re visiting castles, bothies, or hiking in the shoulder months, daylight drops fast. A proper head torch weighs nothing and is far more useful than your phone’s battery-draining flashlight.
- Your trainers won’t cut it on Scottish terrain. Even “easy” walks like the Fairy Pools on Skye have rocky, boggy ground. Proper waterproof hiking boots with ankle support aren’t optional — they’re the difference between enjoying the walk and limping back.
- Carry cash for the Highlands. Card machines in rural Highland pubs, village shops, and ferry terminals are unreliable. Having £30-£50 in cash means you won’t go hungry when the WiFi-dependent card reader decides not to work.

A Traveller’s Perspective
I have packed for Scotland in every season and the single most important thing I can tell you is this: layers matter more than any individual item. A bright July morning in Edinburgh can turn into a cold, windy afternoon in the Highlands within the same day. Do not pack for one type of weather.
Bring a proper waterproof jacket, not a fashion raincoat. Something with sealed seams and a hood that actually stays on in wind. Wear walking shoes that have been broken in — Scotland’s best experiences are on foot, whether that is a coastal path or a cobbled close in Edinburgh. Pack a small daypack for water, snacks, and that extra layer you will definitely need by 3pm.
There is nothing quite like standing on a ridge in Glencoe with the wind pulling at your jacket, watching clouds roll through the valley below. If you are properly dressed for it, that moment is magic. If you are in trainers and a hoodie, you will spend the whole time wishing you were back in the car. Scotland rewards preparation — pack smart and the weather becomes part of the adventure, not an obstacle.
